Hardware Guide — Which Sensors Do I Need?

Confused about sensor types, quantities, or installation? This guide answers every hardware question.

Sensor Types Explained (In Plain English)

V3 Temp & Humidity Sensor

Use for: Fridges, freezers, coolrooms, dry agers, display cases
What it does: Sticks magnetically to fridge wall, logs temp + humidity every 5-15 min
Size: 82mm × 82mm × 26mm (about the size of a small coaster)
Battery: 2+ years, non-rechargeable (we send replacements under warranty)
Installation: Stick to metal wall, press button, done (30 seconds)
Works in: -40°C to +85°C (perfect for freezers and coolrooms)

When to use: This is your standard sensor for 90% of cold storage monitoring.

V3 Probe Sensor

Use for: Smokers, ovens, cooking processes, internal meat temps
What it does: Same sensor body, but with 1-meter stainless steel probe
Insert probe into: Meat during cooking, smoker chamber, oven cavity
Battery: 2+ years
Installation: Magnetic mount on exterior, run probe cable through smoker door seal
Temperature range: Probe rated to +300°C for cooking applications

When to use: Cooking logs for ready-to-eat products (hams, salamis, bacon), smoking processes, or monitoring internal meat temperatures.

Cable Temp Probe

Use for: Specialty installs (tight spaces, through-wall monitoring)
What it does: External temperature probe on 2-meter cable
Use cases: Display fridges where sensor body won’t fit inside, monitoring temps through insulated walls
Battery: 2+ years
Installation: Mount sensor body outside fridge, run cable to probe location inside

When to use: Rare situations where standard sensor won’t physically fit or you need to monitor through barriers.

How Many Sensors Do I Need?

Small Retail Butcher Shop

  • 1 coolroom = 1 sensor
  • 2 display fridges = 2 sensors
  • 1 freezer = 1 sensor
    Total: 4 sensors

Medium Butcher + Smallgoods

  • 1 coolroom = 1 sensor
  • 4 display fridges = 4 sensors
  • 1 freezer = 1 sensor
  • 1 dry ager = 1 sensor (tracks temp + humidity for aging)
  • 2 smokers = 2 probe sensors Total: 9 sensors (7 standard + 2 probe)

Butcher with Delivery Vehicle

Add: 1 sensor for van/truck fridge

Multi-Site Operations

Multiply per location. Each site needs its own BLE gateway (included with 3+ sensors).

Installation — No Drilling Required

Standard Installation (30 seconds):

  1. Open fridge/freezer door
  2. Stick sensor to interior metal wall (magnetic mount)
  3. Position away from door and cooling coils (for accurate readings)
  4. Press activation button once
  5. Close door — sensor starts logging immediately

Non-Metal Surfaces:

If your fridge has plastic or glass interior, use included 3M adhesive mount (sticks permanently).

Probe Sensor Installation:

  1. Mount sensor body on outside of smoker/oven (magnetic or adhesive)
  2. Run probe cable through door seal or vent hole
  3. Insert probe into smoker chamber or meat product
  4. Close door — cable is thin enough not to break seal

Common question: “Do I drill holes?”
Answer: No. Magnetic or adhesive mounting only. No permanent modifications.

Internet & Connectivity Requirements

In Your Shop:

  • BLE Gateway: Plugs into power and connects to your shop Wi-Fi. Receives sensor data and transmits to cloud.
  • Tablets/Phones: Need internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to access the app, view temperature data, complete checklists.

For Delivery Drivers:

  • Tablet: Needs 4G/5G mobile data (or phone hotspot) to access delivery module while on the road.

What Doesn’t Need Internet:

  • Temperature Sensors: Battery-powered, transmit via Bluetooth to gateway (no Wi-Fi needed at sensor level).

If Internet Goes Down:

  • Sensors continue logging temperature data locally (stored on gateway)
  • Data uploads automatically when internet reconnects
  • You won’t get real-time alerts during outage (alerts resume when back online)

Bottom line: Shop needs stable Wi-Fi. Delivery tablets need mobile data plans.

Battery Life & Replacement

How long do batteries last?
2+ years typical (24-30 months depending on logging frequency and temperature extremes).

Are they rechargeable?
No. Non-rechargeable lithium batteries. This is intentional—no charging cables in your fridges, no risk of power failures.

What happens when batteries die?
We send replacement sensors under warranty. Swap old sensor for new one in 30 seconds. Old sensors are recycled.

How do I know when battery is low?
Dashboard shows battery level for each sensor. You’ll get alerts 30 days before expected battery death.

Sizing & Physical Dimensions

V3 Temp & Humidity Sensor:

  • Size: 82mm × 82mm × 26mm (W × H × D)
  • Weight: ~120g
  • Visual: About the size of a drink coaster, 26mm thick

V3 Probe Sensor:

  • Sensor body: Same 82mm × 82mm × 26mm
  • Probe: 1-meter cable, 4mm diameter stainless steel tip

Cable Temp Probe:

  • Sensor body: Same 82mm × 82mm × 26mm
  • Cable: 2-meter length, 3mm diameter

Will they fit in my dry ager / display fridge / under-counter freezer?
Yes. They’re compact enough to fit anywhere without blocking shelves or products.

Common Questions

Q: Do sensors work in -20°C freezers?
A: Yes. Rated for -40°C to +85°C. Perfect for blast freezers.

Q: Can I move sensors between fridges?
A: Yes, but not recommended. Once installed, leave them in place for consistent data. If you need to move one, just peel off and restick (magnetic mount) or reinstall adhesive mount.

Q: What if my fridge has a glass door?
A: Standard sensor works fine. If you’re worried about aesthetics, use Cable Temp Probe with sensor body hidden outside and probe inside.

Q: Do I need a sensor for every shelf in my display fridge?
A: No. One sensor per fridge is sufficient. Place it on the middle shelf or back wall for average temperature reading.

Q: What about humidity monitoring in my dry ager?
A: V3 Temp & Humidity sensor tracks both. Essential for beef/lamb aging (need 70-85% humidity).

Q: Can sensors monitor cooking temps above 100°C?
A: Yes. Probe sensors are rated to +300°C for ovens, smokers, and high-temp cooking applications.
